Militants kill Police Superintendent in Assam
Nitya Nanda Goswami and his PSO were shot dead by rebels
Guwahati: In a major setback to the security forces in the counter-insurgency operations in Assam, a superintendent of police and his personal security officer were shot dead by rebels of the Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers in Karbi Anglong district of central Assam.
The incident took place on Thursday night when SP Nitya Nanda Goswami of Hamren district launched an operation after a specific tipoff on the presence of KPLT chairman Donri Tisso alias Killer Tisso at a camp deep inside the Rongthang forest range in the Rongphu police station area.
In a hurriedly-planned operation with only 18 personnel, the SP, his additional SP and other policemen split into three groups to launch the operation, with Mr Goswami heading a team of five policemen, security sources said.
While zeroing in towards the camp, the team lead by the SP himself came face to face with a contingent of nearly 20 heavily-armed rebels who opened fire. The policemen retaliated, but in the gunbattle Mr Goswami and his PSO were killed, security sources said.
