New Delhi: Newly elected Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan called on President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.

A release issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat said that Mahajan called on the President at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. She met the Prime Minister at his official residence.

Mahajan was elected as Speaker of the 16th Lok Sabha on Friday after a motion moved by the Prime Minister and seconded by BJP veteran L K Advani was adopted by voice vote.

On Saturday, she had called on Vice President Hamid Ansari, also Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

71-year-old Mahajan, a BJP veteran, was elected unopposed to the high office, becoming the second woman to occupy the position after her predecessor Meira Kumar.
