Mumbai Metro rail sees one lakh commuters on 1st day
Maharashtra CM Prithviraj Chavan flagged off the first service from Versova along with Anil Ambani
Mumbai: The Sunday morning saw all 12 metro stations in the Versova-Ghatkopar route packed with Mumbaikars who had turned up in large numbers to sample the metro service. Such was the craze that they were there right from 9 am, much before the service had even started. In fact, the metro officials had made prior announcements that services would start at 1 pm but there was no stopping the enthusiasts belonging to all sections of the society and age groups.
Maharashtra CM Prithviraj Chavan flagged off the first service from Versova along with Anil Ambani.
Clearing his stance on the issue of fare hike, Mr Chavan said, “Regarding the fare, the MMRDA has filed a petition in Court and the hearing is scheduled for tomorrow. We will adhere to the verdict of the Court and/ or the fare fixation panel.”
The passengers were seen inquiring about the metro services and its technicalities; some were even filming the scene on camera. Some passengers, who got a token instead of a usual ticket, looked surprised. All eyes were glued to the ticket vending machines that were accepting not just coins but bank notes also. The station attendants had to request the passengers to wait for their turn at the vending machines. One train was stranded for half an hour at Jagruti Nagar station making commuters a bit nervous.
