Mumbai: The Android operating systems is not just for phones and tablets, developers have used the platform to create affordable gaming platforms, possibly aimed at the rest of us who may not be able to afford a Sony PlayStation or a Nintendo.

Mitashi has launched a gaming console specially tailored for children — the first in India on an Android platform. The GameIn ThunderBolt2 is a 5 inch touch-screen device running Android's Jelly bean version and powered by a dual core processor, with 1 GB RAM and 8 GB of onboard memory — adequate for almost all currently popular games A micro SD slot allows users to add another 32 GB of memory. This also enables one to watch other videos or listen to music that one can store on a MicroSD card. And when more than one child plays, the console can be connected to a TV with a high definition HDMI cable for a larger display. A 2 megapixel camera is something children will relish in these 'selfie'-crazy days.

As parents know only too well, buying their kids a games machine is just the thin end of the spending wedge, so to speak!  The real cost lies in all those individual games, without which the console is a useless device.

Mitashi has cannily addressed this problem — by throwing in a free starter pack of games from the market leaders, Electronics Arts and Disney, which bought separately would cost over Rs 1000. These are not time-limited trial versions (a common ploy!) but full-function games: the list includes popular titles like 'Need for Speed: Shift', 'Hit Out Heroes', 'Toy Story: Smash It', 'The Game of Life' and 'Cricket T20 Fever'.

The console is WiFi enabled — which means one can go online to the Google Play Store where you can find over 900,000 games of both the educative and entertainment type — many of these are free!

With rainy days ahead, the Thunderbolt2 might just be what will keep kids out of mischief and wholesomely entertained on days of enforced stay indoors!  Thunderbolt2 is available at an MRP of Rs 7,999.
