Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh social welfare minister Ravela Kishore Babu requested the Union minister for social justice and empowerment, Mr Thawar Chand Gehlot, to provide 100 per cent Central assistance for post metric scholarship scheme for SCs on par with North Eastern states.

He said that the AP government was extending the scheme to cover 3,238 students, while the Centre was supporting only 176 students. He requested the Centre to enhance its support.

Mr Kishore said that the state government extended post metric scholarship to 6.28 lakh BCs students, but the Centre provides coverage for 1.18 lakh students. He requested the Union minister to provide Rs 153 crore to construct 11 residential school buildings.

He said the Central schemes for disabled and the senior citizens are limited both in number and scope.

The budgetary allocations have also been meagre and have stagnated during the last five years. He said the flow of funds needs to be enhanced as the disabled and the senior citizens represent the most vulnerable section of society.
