Vijayawada: A head constable of Gudivada rural police was allegedly beaten up at the Gudivada sub-jail after he stopped some officials from supplying liquor and food to certain prisoners.

According to sources, on Monday, head constable Venkataswami, who was posted at the sub-jail, questioned some of the jail staff who were allegedly supplying liquor and biryani to prisoners remanded in a murder case. They reportedly told Mr Venkataswami that they were only “following orders” of the higher-ups. The argument led to a fight.

Later, Mr Venkataswami said that the jail staff beat him up for objecting to liquor supply. The jail superintendent refused to comment on the issue.

However, Gudivada rural police station also backed Mr Venkataswami and accused the jail staff of irregularities.
