Hyderabad: With the Rs 5 meal becoming a hit, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will start a Rs 1 breakfast service from July at its food scheme centres.

The service will include food items like idly, vada and upma. Currently, eight centres are running, and the remaining 42 will be operational by July 1.

Hyderabad Mayor Majid Hussain said, “The breakfast for Rs 1 will be a dream come true for me. The GHMC’s budget is close to Rs 4,599 crore out of which only Rs 11 crore will be spent and more than 15,000 people will get the benefit for 365 days. After launching all the 50 centres, the breakfast scheme for Rs 1 will be taken up in the coming months.”

GHMC commissioner Somesh Kumar said, “Currently, eight centres are running and the remaining 42 will be functioning by July 1. Most of the food scheme centres don’t have proper sheds and basic infrastructure; Keeping the rainy season in view, the GHMC is planning to improve the food scheme centres for the convenience of the people.”

The GHMC will identify more centres at main locations where the poor frequently gather, like near railway stations, bus depots etc., so that the scheme can be started in all the 50 centres as had been decided earlier.
