Chennai: The first look poster of the Karthi-starrer, Madras, which was strategically released recently by its makers, Studio Green, went viral on the net. The actor returns after a gap with the film, Madras, where he plays an IT guy, Kaali, from North Madras, a role that is in complete contrast to the stylish Casanova he played in his last outing, Biryani.
The movie, directed by Ranjith of Attakatthi fame, is set in the backdrop of North Chennai. Speaking of how he grabbed the plum role, Karthi says, “Actually, Ranjith’s script came to me for my views on the screenplay. It fascinated me so much that I thought why not I give a shot at it.”
He adds, “Even today, when I talk to someone, I still tend to refer to my place as ‘Madras’ instead of ‘Chennai’. Now after working on this film, this too has become one of my favourites. Since I have been born and brought up in Chennai, to pick up the North Chennai lingo was not that difficult. But yes, I did observe the people over there before I actually started my shoot.” Catherine Tresa from Tollywood appears as Karthi’s pair. It is learnt that she was given proper training in Chennai Tamil and the background of people who live in North Chennai before she got into the act.
Heaping laurels on Karthi, director Ranjith says, “The movie will reflect the life of people in North Madras which has its own characteristic style. Karthi has given his 100 per cent and lived in the character of Kaali. His dedication is amazing. At times we even shot some of the scenes in minuscule rooms for days together. If he comes in front of the camera, he becomes Kaali, not Karthi.” Santhosh Narayan has composed the tracks. Award winning cinematographer Murali from Pune Film Institute debuts in Tamil with Madras.
