New Delhi: Under instruction from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the National Informatics Centre has issued an order to all 70 ministries and departments, which run independent website, to update their portals in line with that of PMO by incorporating Twitter and Facebook and designate officials to deal with them.

With this being high on the agenda, as ministers are also independently told to preferably communicate through social media instead of conventional media, the ministry of defence appears to have taken the lead by soon starting its Twitter handle.

Sources said among the possible handle names under consideration is @MODI, the acronym for ministry of defence, India.
After the PMO and information & broadcasting ministry, the latest to join Twitter is the ministry of home affairs with its handle name is @HMOIndia.

Incidentally, here in case of ministry of home affairs, MO of NaMo (Narendra Modi) has been culled out to name the Twitter handle.
Besides defence and MHA, rest of the ministries and departments have also begun working on the required hardware, software and nomenclatures to be adopted by them to use Twitter handle and Facebook Account.

A senior NIC official said, “As out director general Rajiv Gauba has sent directives to all nodal officers in each of the ministries and departments to provide technical support to officials build Twitter handles and FB account and make the portals more interactive, we are working overtime to ensure that such facilities are given as early as possible.”
But the content and names of handle and account would only be decided by the ministry officials, he added saying: “We are providing them shoftware and hardware support only”.
