Visakhapatnam: The official data of NCRB for 2013 has indicated an alarming rise in suicidal tendencies among men compared to women.  Vizag and Vijayawada in AP stood 26th in the list of suicides among  53 mega cities in the country in 2013.

In Vizag, 248 people,182 men and 66 women took their lives in 2013, making the city the suicide capital in AP. Statistics show that the number of suicides in Vizag increased by 10 per cent from last year.

More worrying is the fact that the reasons for suicide are becoming increasingly trivial. Another cause for concern is that the age group of victims ranges between 15 and 29 years and 30 and 44 years.

Psychiatrists in the city said that social, economic, family problems and failed love affairs led most males to kill themselves, whereas emotional and personal reasons were the cause for women ending committing suicide.

The also said that incidents of suicides over the past two years have indicated that youngsters and the below 40 years age group in the city feel that suicide the only way out. Students, youngsters and employees in private sector have been taking the extreme step over various reasons. Sadly, there is not a single dedicated helpline for students and youngsters in the city whom they can approach in times of distress.

City police officials said that youngsters must learn to face failures in life and open up to parents to sort out their problems. They also expressed concern over the fact that most of the city colleges lack counsellors who could be invaluable in providing help and preventing them from taking the final step.
