Bengaluru: While the city’s garbage problem has always vexed BBMP officials, this time they are overwhelmed by the response to their drive to fill the 4,000 posts of pourakarmikas. It has been just four days after the civic agency started issuing application forms and already 25,000 forms have been issued and even touts have emerged to make a killing.

According to BBMP sources middlemen were charging anywhere between Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 per aspirant to get a pourakarmika job. The Palike has requested citizens not to entertain them and clarified that it would not be responsible if any applicant was cheated by middlemen.

BBMP commissioner M. Lakshminarayan said that applicants would be given job based on their experience. “There is no question of influence or recommendation as we are not conducting any direct interview. The recruitment will be free and fair. An applicant will be given the job based on his/her experience. Those with 10 years of experience will have an advantage,” he said.

“On the first day (July 2), we distributed forms only for two hours as there was commotion. However, the next day we distributed 10,000 application forms in six hours. Many educated people and working professionals too are applying for the post, as it is a government job. We never expected the demand to be so high,” said a BBMP staffer at the form counter. The applications, priced Rs 20, will be issued till July 27 and the last date to submit the duly filled forms is July 31.
