956 employment exchanges operational in country: Union Government
Even though there is an increase in the registration, placements still lag behind
New Delhi: The Union government stated that there are 956 employment exchanges functioning in the country and there has been an increase in the number of registrations in them.
Minister of State for Labour and Employment Vishnu Deo Sai told the Lok Sabha in a written reply that as per the data of 2012 collected from employment exchanges, a total of 97.22 lakh people registered themselves, while placement in the same year was 4.28 lakh.
In 2011, 62.06 lakh people had got themselves registered in the exchanges, while 4.72 lakh got placed. "The above data shows an increase in registration, but placement of job-seekers has not been increasing," Sai said.
He said the government has decided to convert employment exchanges into career centres in collaboration with the state governments for providing counselling services to students and job seekers along with other employment-related assistance. According to the data, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of employment exchanges at 91, while Kerela has 89 of them.
