Hyderabad: A pair of exotic primates, the Golden Handed Tamarin Monkeys, one-and-a-half-years-old each, made their way to the Nehru Zoological Park on Wednesday.

They are currently in their quarantine period and will be put for public display in 10 days.

Originally natives of South America, Columbia, Guiana and the Amazon, they are omnivorous animals with a lifespan of about 20 years in captivity.

These animals were gifted to the Nehru Zoological Park by the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation.

“They weigh about 250 grams and eat fruits, insects or lizards. The female reaches her maturity at three years of age, whereas the male at four. The gestation period lasts for 140 days and the female gives birth only to twins. They mostly lives in groups,” said B.N.N. Murthy, curator, Nehru Zoological Park.
