New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday accused the government of “vindictiveness” after an income-tax notice was issued in the National Herald case, saying such “political witch-hunt will only help us come back”.

In an interview, Mrs Gandhi said: “The income-tax notice in the National Herald case is political vindictiveness. A political witch-hunt will only help us come back and fight harder.”

Party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi confirmed at the regular AICC briefing that it had got the I-T notice on Wednesday. “This notice and earlier procedures are going to be given a vigorous, robust and comprehensive reply... a befitting reply,” he said.

He said the Congress was not in the habit of sharing such replies with the media in advance, but said this kind of “vendetta politics” showed the “fear and insecurity” of the new government. Mr Singhvi remarked that political history showed how vendetta and pettiness boomeranged.
