Hyderabad: A 10-year-old student of Bhashyam Public School in Surya Nagar, Old Alwal, drowned in the school’s swimming pool on Thursday afternoon. The school management has been booked for alleged negligence.

Though the school was closed on the day, Surya, a student of Class IV,  managed to enter the premises and get into the pool.

According to the police, Surya, son of Krishna Kanth, a steel utensils trader and a resident of Alwal, came to the school even though it was holiday.

He entered through a small gate next to the main gate as it was closed. Though he did not know how to swim, Surya entered the pool, which was about five feet deep, and drowned.

The security guard was not near the pool at the time of the incident.

“Though his room is close to the pool, he was inside the school helping laborers engaged in carpentry works. The guard rushed to the victim’s rescue, but it was too late by then,” said Rambabu, investigating officer, Alwal police station. The police was informed by the school authorities at around 2pm.

There was mild tension at the school premises when the victim’s parents staged a protest alleging negligence on the school’s part. The protesters  questioned how a student was allowed into the campus when the school wasn’t open. Cops booked the school for negligence and disappearance of evidence.
