Fans watch with disappointment after Germany humiliated Brazil

On the unfortunate night of Brazil’s World Cup hammering against a rampant German side, many records were broken. The records weren’t just related to football, but outside of the sport as well  the 90minute nightmare was the most tweeted sporting event on Twitter ever.

Twitter has since revealed that the German 7-1 victory over hosts Brazil was tweeted a massive 35.6 million times. That broke the previous record held by Brazil beating Chile on penalties two weeks earlier almost by double. It also eclipsed the Super Bowl’s 2014 record of 24.9 million tweets.

Germany’s Sami Khedira, who scored the fifth goal, also broke a record by receiving 5,60,166 tweets per minute. In comparison, at its peak, the Brazil Vs Chile game had 3,89,000 tweets per minute and the 2014 Super Bowl received 3,82,000 tweets per minute. Khedira’s goal even topped previous records held by Miley Cyrus’ infamous MTV VMA performance, Obama’s DNC acceptance speech, Usain Bolt’s 200m gold medal and Beyonce’s 2013 Super Bowl halftime show.

The statistics are great news for Twitter, as the microblogging Website has been increasingly associated with globally popular televised events, and seems to have a slight upper hand over Facebook as well. From the looks of it all, it sure looks like Twitter’s popularity is here to stay for a long time to come.
