Telangana bandh peaceful, hits normal life
All educational institutions, major commercial establishments remained closed
Hyderabad: The one-day Telangana bandh, called by the Telangana JAC on Saturday to protest the passage of Bill in Lok Sabha transferring seven mandals in Khammam district to Andhra Pradesh to facilitate the Polavaram project, went off peacefully.
Barring a few stray incidents of stone pelting in Khammam, no untoward incidents were reported from anywhere.
Normal life was affected due to the near total bandh in districts, but evoked mixed response in the city. All educational institutions and major commercial establishments remained closed, but by evening all commercial establishments in the city opened their doors.
RTC buses remained off the road in all the 10 districts with agitators staging protests in front of bus depots while the TRS, the Congress and the Left workers took out rallies in several parts of the state.
The MGBS and the Jubilee Bus stations in Hyderabad and Secunderabad wore a deserted look as the 4,500-odd buses remained in the dep-ots. There was no disturbance to rail services in the region, including MMTS in Hyderabad, according to South Central Railway officials.
Khammam district, observed complete bandh with representatives of all parties coming out on the roads to enforce the bandh.
Dharnas, rasta rokos and protest rallies were held in different parts of the state demanding that the Centre reverse its decision.
