Hyderabad: 16 people were booked for illegally slaughtering camels in the open. Meatshop owners who buy camels must have GHMC permission. As per the GHMC Act 1955, traders have to get permission before bringing domesticated animals into the city for slaughtering.

“Camel meat is sold in the old city for Rs 400 a kg and since it is not a notified animal many adopt illegal ways,”  said Mahesh Aggarwal, President, AP Goshala Federation. Ramzan and Bakrid. It has become a common practice. Last year, the police rescued 150 camels, which were sent back.

It takes six months for camel traders to get camels all the way from Rajasthan to Hyderabad by road. More than 500 camels have arrived and another 300 will be joining them shortly," said Mahesh Aggarwal, President, AP Goshala Federation.

"Camel meat is sold in different part of old city for Rs 400 a kg and since it is not a notified animal to slaughter in our slaughterhouses, many take the illegal way out,"  said Mahesh Aggarwal, President, AP Goshala Federation.
