'The World Before Her'

Mumbai: Award-winning documentary 'The World Before Her' has been nominated for the prestigious Emmy awards in the Outstanding Coverage of a Current News Story category.

Directed by Nisha Pahuja, the story shows two fascinating worlds of the Miss India pageant and a Hindu fundamentalist camp for girls. In one, Ruhi Singh is a small-town girl competing in Bombay to win the Miss India pageant—her ticket to stardom. In the other India, Prachi Trivedi is a young, militant leader at a camp for girls run by the Durga Vahini, the women’s wing of the VHP. Here she preaches violent resistance to Western culture, Christianity, and Islam.

Canadian born Pahuja says: “It is such an honour to be nominated for an Emmy and especially to receive the news in India where the team has worked so hard to get the film out to audiences...I hope the nomination encourages audiences in India to continue to support The World Before Her, and just as importantly, I hope this continues to build and strengthen the documentary community here."

The 35th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards will be presented on September 30, 2014.
