Hyderabad: An alcoholic degree student stole laptops to buy liquor and targeted private hostels on the city outskirts.

Syed Tabrez, 20, from Golnaka of Amberpet, stole at least 16 laptops from rooms of college students in Saroornagar, Chaitanyapuri, and LB Nagar.

Tabrez entered the rooms in the morning when the victims were asleep or careless. He fooled security guards and hostel owners by pretending to be a student living in those hostels.

“If anybody confronted him, he would say that he came to meet a friend and give out random names,” said M. Rajani, ACP of Cyberabad CCS.

“After a recce, he entered the hostel during the day, and steal laptops,” said a CCS police officer. The laptops were sold at CTC in Secunderabad.

Police said most of the shop owners did not ask for a bill while buying the laptops from him.
