Election Commission says paid news not illegal activity

MUMBAI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has said that the paid news is not an illegal activity. The commission also expressed his helplessness over action in the cases of paid news. It said that there is no law to deal with paid news especially cases related to political parties. “First of all paid news is not an illegal activity. Secondly, laws related to paid news are very weak and mostly importantly, there is no law to deal with political parties in cases of paid news,” V.S. Sampath, chief elections commissioner said. Mr Sampath was replying to a question about action against political parties found involved in the menace of paid news. The election commission has been dealing with a high-profile case of Ashok Chavan, former chief minister of Maharashtra related to
paid news.
