Chennai: Announcing the enactment of a new legislation in the current Assembly Session to curb “sartorial despotism” perpetrated by clubs like the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association Club, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa slammed the TNCA Club for “demeaning the Tamil culture and civilisation.”

Ms Jayalalithaa, made a suo moto statement in the Assembly on Wednesday in the wake of denial of entry to dhoti-clad Justice D. Hariparanthaman (of the Madras HC) on July 11 by the TNCA Club.

Strongly condemning the private club for imposing a dress code and denying entry to the Judge, Ms. Jayalalithaa said, “This is a denigrating act. I strongly condemn it. There is no by-law in the TNCA, which banned wearing of dhoti in its campus. As per the club’s dress regulation persons attired in coloured Bermudas, colour,  multi colour lunghies, cut banians, vests and or wearing Hawaii chappals will  not be permitted into the TNCA Club,”

The Chief Minister said that she had directed the Tamil Nadu registrar of societies to issue a show notice to the TNCA Club over the issue.
