UGC, AICTE asked to frame rules for students’ excursion

Currently there isn't any provision in the UGC or the AICTE Act regarding students’ safety during study tours

New Delhi: In the wake of 24 students from Hyderabad being washed away in the river Beas last month, Union HRD minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday said the AICTE and UGC would submit  their recommendations on  precautionary measures that institutions should take regarding  to students’ safety during excursions.

Responding to questions about the tragedy, Ms Irani said she has received lots of recommendations, including making it mandatory for institutions to write to the concerned authorities while undertaking tour to dams,  power plants and sea bridges.

Sympathizing with the MPs, she said there is no provision in the UGC or the AICTE Act  regarding students’ safety during study tours.
