Hyderabad: The GHMC commissioner was approached by 52 corporators, from the TD, BJP and the Congress, who wanted the demolition drive stopped. They accused the government for targeting only the constituencies of Opposition leaders.

The corporators alleged that while “unauthorised” buildings were being razed in Serilingampally, Rajendernagar, Qutbullapur, Kukatpally and LB Nagar, areas like Chandrayangutta and Darussalam were spared. “Why is the GHMC sparing the constituencies of MIM and TRS MLAs?” they asked.

However, an MIM leader said that several buildings mentioned in the list of illegal  structures in the South Zone and most of the constituencies in the South Zone are represented by MIM.

The corporators fear that they will face the wrath of the voters during the municipal elections in November. They have asked the GHMC to regularise buildings by collecting a fine instead. A resolution has also been passed that the GHMC would levy heavy property tax on completed illegal constructions until they are demolished or regularised.
