Washington: An American actress has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for mailing ricin-laced letters to President Barack Obama and New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. Shannon Guess Richardson was arrested by police in June last year after she posted the letters to the leaders, a crime she tried to frame her ex-husband in.

The 36-year-old from Texas, a pro-guns activist, had small parts in US TV shows, including Vampire Diaries. She pleaded guilty for possessing and producing a biological toxin and received what’s being described as the maximum sentence on Friday.
