KOZHIKODE: It is now costly for lovers to register their marriages as well as for those who do post-marriage registration  which is mandatory under the special marriages Act.

The fee which was Rs 10 earlier is now Rs 1,000.   The revision order issued by the registration department in November  last year,  which is being implemented now, has also made several other services more expensive.

The people’s ignorance about the revision has led to arguments between applicants,  office staff and  document writers who facilitate the registration proceedings.

The fee for marriage registration  was first increased to Rs 100 and then to Rs 1,000, it is learnt. The fee for encumbrance certificate (EC) for land transactions and  bank loans  has been increased from Rs 80 to Rs 310 for 15 years. The fee  goes up if one takes the loan from a nationalised bank as most  such banks have made 30 years’ EC mandatory.

The fee for certified copy of registration documents, including tile deeds,  was Rs 7 per 100 words earlier, which has been increased to a total of Rs 200 now.

“Complaints have resulted from the ignorance of the public,”  said Mr R. Madhu, district registrar, Kozhikode. But the document writers’ association points out that instead of going for a steep rise, the department could have increased it step by step.  All-Kerala stamp vendors’ association state vice-president K.J. Devasia told DC that the increase was  long-pending. “The only issue is that the department should have given sufficient awareness to the people on the increase,”  he added.
