Gujarat model to take India up ease list
World Bank chief says India will rise 50 places on Gujarat model
New Delhi: World Bank chief Jim Yong Kim on Wednesday said that India’s business standing will jump 50 places if the ranking is done on the basis of Gujarat. He said that the World Bank promised Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide financial support of $15-18 billion over the next three years to India to create more jobs and fight poverty.
However, Mr Modi said that rather than dollars, India is more interested in knowledge and expertise of World Bank. “Dr Kim agreed and said WB can be our information bank,” tweeted Mr Modi. Prime minister said that government want ideas from the World Bank not only on mass production but also on production by masses, which will benefit “our workforce.”
The World bank president seemed to have been impressed with the Prime Minister. He said India’s business standing will jump 50 places if the ranking is done on the basis of Gujarat.
“If the ranking of India in doing business report was based just on Gujarat, they would improve 50 places in the doing business ranking. So, my hope is that what Modi did in Gujarat in improving business environment can be scaled up now to all of India and if that happens then India will rise quickly in rankings of doing business in India,” said Mr Kim.
Roping World bank to his favourite project of clean Ganga, Prime Minister also suggested to Dr Kim that the cleaning of the Ganga would be a very inspiring project for the World Bank.
“We talked about the importance of scale and the need to work on a scale that inspires people and positively transforms their lives... Speeding up World Bank projects will surely increase the impact,” said Mr Modi.
