New Delhi: Not only did he skip the Iftar party hosted by President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday, sufficient hints have come from his office that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may choose not to host such a banquet during this holy month of Ramzan, which is the first since he has taken up the country’s top job.

This is a clear departure from the past tradition, as almost all his predecessors including ex-PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee held Iftar at their residences.

When asked if the PM intends to host Iftar this year, sources indicated that as of now “no decision has been taken in this regard”.

The President hosted an Iftar at Rashtrapati Bhawan where the PM and other VVIPs were invited. But Mr Modi could not attend it as he was in Mumbai. Home minister Rajnath Singh and minority affairs minister Najma Heptullah represented the government.

Sources said, there is nothing “unusual” of the PM not hosting such an event, as during his  tenure as the CM of Gujarat he never did it.
