NEW DELHI: Several Opposition MPs in a letter to the Speaker demanded a probe into the incident of a Shiv Sena MP forcing a chapatti down the throat of a IRCTC catering supervisor, desp-ite his pleas that he was fasting.

BJP MPs and ministers, including minority affairs minister Najma Heptua-llah, preferred to remain silent over the issue.

The Shiv Sena MPs tried to deflect the issue, saying they were merely protesting against “bad food”, “stale water” and poor service at Maharashtra Sadan. They also said that they were not “aware” that the victim was from the minority community. Some of them even claimed that this was a “political conspiracy” ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls in Maharashtra.
