Two Chennai overbridges to cost Rs 185 crore

An overbridge would come up near Tambaram railway station at Rs 12 crore

Chennai: Taking into account the increasing traffic requirements of Greater Chennai, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced the construction of two multi-lane overbridges at Medavakkam and Keelkattalai at a cost of Rs 185 crore and a vehicular subway in the Southern Ring Road at a cost of Rs 50 crore with the help of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
 
An escalator-cum-pedestrian overbridge would be set up near suburban Tambaram railway station at a cost of Rs 12 crore. Upgradation of the state highway between Oragadam, an industrial belt, and Singaperumalkoil, lying south of the city, to a six-lane road at a cost of Rs 120 crore and conversion of ring road between Meenakshi Mission and Kappalur around Madurai city to four lanes at a cost of Rs 200 crore would be taken up.
 
Road projects worth Rs 1,130 crore have been identified and the work on projects worth Rs 400 crore would commence this year, Ms Jayalalithaa said. Further Rs 300 crore assistance from Nabard would be used to construct 100 bridges on panchayat union roads, she said.
 
Agreements for Rs 1,020 crore would be signed for maintenance and development of all state roads and important district roads in Ramanathapuram and Krishnagiri districts for a period of five years.
