Chennai: Provide escalators and install CCTV cameras in all  new subways to be constructed at five congested pockets are some of the suggestions people give to Chennai corporation authorities who are now inviting public opinions on new subways. “Most citizens who have sent their suggestions online wanted escalators and some of them wanted cameras in the subways that are friendly to the aged and the disabled.

There were aesthetic design and illumination suggestions also from people,” said Mr Rathnakara Reddy, managing director, Infra Support Engineering Consultant Pvt Ltd., the firm that is now preparing the project report for the Corporation subways at Kodambakkam, Marina Beach, Pursawalkam, Vadapalani and Ayanavaram.

Besides mail and telephone conversations, there are also suggestions received at the mail box, mayor@chennaicorporation.gov.in and there are also written suggestions to the corporation. All communications will be embedded and passed to the corporation authorities along with the detailed project report within two months, he said.
Recent studies have shown that people prefer subways to elevated staircases and it has been decided, as a policy, to go in for subways.

The project will take off by the end of the year and the construction period for each structure will be about two years, a corporation official said, adding that the subway connecting the pedestrian movement near Marina beach-DGP office will be T shaped.
The cost of each structure will range from Rs 2 to Rs 5 crore, and in case of the Kodambakkam structure, it will be a six-way structure, the official explained, adding that people can send in their suggestions till Friday on how their new subways ought to be.

“The existing subways are old fashioned and the corporation should go in for more glass tinted structures that will provide natural lighting facilities,” opined Mr S. Selvaraj, a retired corporation employee.
