Bengaluru: An accused in a double murder case, lodged in Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, gave a live telephonic interview to a local news TV channel on Friday, making a complete mockery of the Rs 6-crore mobile jammers on the 40-acre campus. The interview went on for more than 15 minutes and the accused explained how he was being tortured by the police.
On April 20, 2013, Dharanesh and his friend Babu, both 25, were hacked to death in a gang war under Nandhini Layout police limits. A day later, a team from Nandini Layout police station went to arrest murder suspect, Yuvaraj, in Kasturi Nagar, Yeshwanthpur. When he tried to escape, the police fired at him. Injured, Yuvaraj was admitted to a hospital and later sent to judicial custody along with 2 other accused.
It was Yuvaraj and another accused, Katta Ravi, who spoke to the media, including Deccan Chronicle. The Nandini Layout police moved court seeking the custody of Yuvaraj and Katta Ravi for Saturday. Getting to know the police action, Yuvaraj spoke live on the local news TV channel. He told the interviewer that the police were torturing his parents and forcing him to admit to the crime. Katta Ravi criticised the modus operandi of the police.
Deccan Chronicle managed to get the two mobile numbers that were used by Yuvaraj, and called him. He said, “If I am moved to custody now, I am sure I will be shot. I am ready to tell the magistrate that the police treated me and my family brutally, and are pressurising us to confess”.
He refused to tell us how he managed to use two phones without the knowledge of the jail authorities. He also did not reveal his barrack number. The authorities were unaware that Yuvaraj had access to mobiles and was talking to the media without any interruption.
