Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao alleged that some vested interests were blackmailing the Telangana government over fee reimbursement. He said the government was willing to pay even Rs 5,000 extra for genuine Telangana students but not to others, come what may.
“There are earlier judgments given by full Benches of the Supreme Court and High Court stating that governments have the right to decide the nativity norms. A judgment by a full Bench of Supreme Court means the law of the land. Despite this, some people are raising a hue and cry over nativity norms stipulated by the Telangana government,” Mr Rao said while speaking at the preparatory meet convened to discuss holding an “Intensive Household Survey” in the state.
Mr Rao said the fee reimbursement scheme had been imposing a heavy financial burden on the government and there was a need to streamline the scheme by filtering out students from other states and for this nativity norms were required.
“I was told that the burden on Telangana government on account of fee reimbursement scheme would be Rs 4,000 crore this year. Of this, Rs 1,363 crore pertains to previous arrears and the rest has to be paid this year. We are not in a position to bear such a huge amount in the new state. We want to extend the benefit only to genuine Telangana students to cut down expenditure,” Mr Rao added.
He, however, assured that no genuine Telangana student would lose out on the benefit, as the government would take every care while determining the eligibility of students based on their nativity; the guidelines in this regard are expected very soon.
