Jammu: Former Union minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Saturday said that the Congress will emerge as the single largest party in the upcoming Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Congress will emerge as the single largest party in the upcoming Assembly polls," the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said while addressing a party workers' convention in Udhampur, 65 kms from here.

Congress and NC have recently announced that they will not be contesting polls together.

The senior Congress leader said that by looking at the enthusiasm and unity of Congress cadres in the several district conventions, there is no doubt that the party will emerge as the single largest party in the ensuing polls. JK Pradesh Congress Committee president Saifuddin Soz was also present at the convention. Azad also asked the state administration to ensure free and fair polls. "That attitude of duty alone would ensure free and fairs elections in the state." Meanwhile, Soz said that Congress is a strong force in all the three regions of the state because it respects the aspirations of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh regions and always worked as a unifying secular force.

"The results of recently-held bypolls in Uttarakhand shows that falsehood spread by BJP is getting exposed and Congress will re-emerge victorious in the upcoming Assembly polls," he said. Both the leaders exhorted the party workers to go to the people at grassroots level and listen to their grievances and bring their problems to the notice of the agencies concerned for redressal. Several other party leaders were also present at the convention.
