NEW DELHI:With the Rajya Sabha numbers not in its favour, the Centre decided Sunday to defer the bigticket Insurance Bill by a day. Parliamentary affairs minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said on Sunday night the bill will now be tabled on Tuesday instead of Monday as scheduled.
Mr Naidu said he would talk to the Congress and other Opposition parties on Monday and bring the Bill the next day.
With the numbers game going against it in Rajya Sabha, the Union Government is understood to have enlisted the support of AIADMK and BJD for the Insurance Amendment Bill. It even has made an appeal to the Congress to support the Bill keeping in mind the “larger national interest.”
According to sources, government managers were working to win over the support of Trinamul and other smaller parties to ensure that the Bill, which will be tabled in Rajya Sabha on Monday, has a smooth sailing.
Sources pointed out that the Centre was willing to deferring the discussion on the Bill by a few days if the Opposition needs a couple of days to read its contents but this could be done only if there is a commitment that they would ensure its passage in the current Session.
