Sharon Joseph was all of three when she was asked to sing. Inhibition must have have been the farthest thing on the mind of the little girl, sitting in Church in Pune, singing Manassin Madiyile from the film Maanathe Vellitheru. She was already learning Carnatic music. The group listening to her had come from Kerala, Rhymes they were called. They called Sharon to sing with them on stage and she sang the same Manassin Madiyile.
Six years later, Sharon made her professional debut, singing for a devotional album called Akshayam. In 2010, she sang for a Tamil film, and this year for a Malayalam film. Now living in Kochi, Sharon has just finished making a music medley video of songs in four languages, unplugged by Mejjo Joseph, and directed by Jis Joy.
“A lot of the Carnatic songs I learnt would be in Tamil, Kannada or Telugu, and my teacher would make sure I understood what I was singing. So, I got a good command on these languages. And I know Marathi because I was brought up in Pune,” says Sharon Joseph.
Her Malayali parents made sure she spoke good Malayalam even while growing up in Pune. Sharon also sings in English and Hindi. After her early initiation into classical music (both Carnatic and Hindustani), she began singing a lot of devotional songs, shuttling between Pune and Kerala to record for at least 60 albums. “That happened thanks to my uncle Joy Joseph, who works as a sound recordist.”
Her film debut happened when music producer Aby Salvin Thomas suggested her name to director Surya Narayan, who was in search of a new voice. “After that, I got busy with my degree and masters,” says Sharon, who moved to Kochi after marriage. There, she met Mejjo Joseph, a friend of her husband’s, who asked if she could sing for his film Hangover.
Sharon is back in the industry, this time in a new role as a music composer of jingles, again for Jis Joy’s ad films. With the music medley, she hopes she can get active in the world of music, all over again.
