Hyderabad: The water-flow regulation plans around Hussainsagar lake in the city remain dormant and caught up in paperwork. It has been revealed that a Rs 50-crore plan to build a new bridge over vents and Rs 10 crore for construction of surplus weirs, to exactly quantify and regulate the extent of outflow, have been lying inactive for years.

Every municipal commissioner talks about this plan, but it is put on the backburner once the concerned official is transferred. The gates are mainly to help the GHMC regulate discharge of flow during heavy rains and at times of excess inflow into Hussainsagar.

Also, the long-pending re-construction of the Hussainsagar Surplus Weir and bridge with gate mechanisms for 11 sluice channels opposite the Hotel Marriot at a cost of Rs 30 crore, has been forwarded to the current government along with reports from consultants.

The project, once built, will help regulate outflow from the lake during heavy inflow. The system was thought up after the August 2000 floods, but was shelved for various reasons.
