Coimbatore:Residents of Karamadai union staged a road roko on Mettupalayam road, protesting lack of drinking water supply for the last 15 days. Despite Pillur and Siruvani reservoirs brimming over following heavy rains, water supply continues to be erratic in several parts of suburban Coimbatore.
Colourful, but empty pots lined up the streets as 300 residents especially women gathered on Mettupalayam road, blocking traffic to Manjur on Wednesday morning. Around 7 am on Wednesday, women from Marthur, Thimampalayam, Pudur, Narikuravar Colony, Vishnu Nagar, Yezhusuli and many other neighbouring hamlets gathered on Mettupalayam Manjur road to stage a protest. Traffic came to a halt for nearly an hour. Residents claimed that the panchayat union had not supplied borewell water and drinking water for more than 15 days.
The protesters urged the officials to maintain regular supplies of water for their daily use. They also threatened to block the Mettupalayam road and hold up the teeming tourist traffic to Ooty if they were not given water immediately. Following the protests, Mettupalayam police team and Karamadai union officials rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the villagers .
However, the protesters refused to move from the place, until the officials assured them that immediate action would be taken to supply water periodically. After the police intervention and the officials' assurance, they dispersed.
On April 15 this year too, residents of Karamadai panchayat union staged a road roko, blocking Karamadai-Tholampalayam road, seeking regular supply of drinking water. After three months, residents took to the streets again for drinking water supply.
