Hyderabad: Thieves broke into the Chandana Brothers shopping mall in Kukatpally Housing Board Colony and fled with gold and cash early on Thursday.

The thieves gained entry into the multi-storied building by drilling a hole in the wall. They broke open the lockers and fled with the valuables.

The surveillance cameras were switched off before the mall was shut down at night. The security personnel were in the basement.

According to V. Sreekanth Goud, inspector of police, KPHB, the unidentified accused apparently conducted a survey of the five-storeied shopping complex.

“They drilled a hole in the wall on the third floor. From there, they came down to the ground floor, broke open the lockers and took away 130 gm of gold and some cash,” Mr Sreekanth said.

Police said the staff had also left some valuables outside instead of keeping them in the safe.

“The staff had turned off the surveillance cameras while shutting down the mall. The security personnel were in the basement and hence the incident went unnoticed,” police said.

Based on a complaint, a case was registered and is being investigated. Police is examining CCTV footage from other cameras in the  area. The loss is yet to be ascertained. The total worth of the stolen property is yet to be ascertained.

Cops are checking for footage from any other surveillance cameras fixed close by. The actual worth of the stolen property is still to be ascertained.

Though there were surveillance cameras fixed in the shopping mall, they were of no use as they had been switched off. “The staff had turned them off while shutting down the mall. The security personnel were in the basement and hence the incident went unnoticed.” police said.
