MVD special drive to make private buses’ ride tough

Thiruvananthapuram: The motor vehicles department officials will conduct a special drive to check proper enforcement of the provisions of MVD Act and rules by private buses from August 16 to 23. This is aimed at inculcating the culture of safe driving among bus operators and to ensure general road safety.

The department has identified 10 major issues to be checked during the drive. They are:

1. Non-wearing of uniform and name badge by employees of buses, especially cleaners.
2. Tampering with speed governors for speeding.
3. Unscientific construction of stands for cleaners in some buses which cause inconvenience to the public.
4. Lack of doors on the buses or doors with no proper lock mechanisms.
5. Tying the door to the bus with ropes causing danger to travellers.
6. Not giving the reserved seats to women, disabled and senior citizens.
7. Not issuing proper tickets to passengers.
8. Installation of music system or video/TV against rules.
9. Halting of buses on the centre of the road and not at bus bays/stops designated for stopping buses and creating road blocks.
10. Buses plying without mandatory records/articles such as medicines, and tools needed to be kept inside the carriage.
Any violation detected will be fined and strict  action will be taken against the concerned.
