Coimbatore:A group of residents from Chettipalayam petitioned collector Archana Patnaik on Friday against opening a Tasmac outlet in their residential neighbourhood. “The officials had actually planned to open the shop near Nabi Nagar on Chettipalayam road on Friday. However, following our protests in front of the shop, they did not open it. Once the shop comes up, then hundreds of residents here are likely to be affected,” said Mr P. Anil Kumar, a resident.
When there was strident opposition from residents against opening of the shop, the police also arrived and convinced them that it would not be opened for the time being. Women fear that men under the influence of alcohol would create trouble for them and the students. “Several children, who go by this way, may feel intimidated by the sight of men consuming liquor. We also fear that the crime rate may increase if a liquor shop comes up in our area,” he said.
The residents have decided to go ahead with protests if the liquor shop comes up in their neighboourhood. Meanwhile, collector Archana Patnaik, who, on receiving the petition, promised to do the needful.
