Chennai: Vietnam Veedu Sundaram, the man known for his powerful scripts and enduring dialogues, has made a unique attempt to mark his glorious 60 years on stage and in Tamil cinema.

Theatre being his forte, Sundaram recently presented Shakespeare’s immortal play, Macbeth, in mime form much to the delight of an elite gathering. There were no dialogues, no grand sets, but everything was there in the form of 30 odd mime artists who enthralled the audience.

According to Sundaram, Shakespeare’s play has been mimed only in Japanese so far, but never in English, and he hopes to create a world record.

The show begins with a soliloquy by Sundaram’s pen. The instrument has become part and parcel of Sundaram’s life in the last 60 years of his writing. “This pen was presented to me by my mother 65 years ago. I still write with this ink pen and consider it my prized possession,” he says.

Sravanth, who has a background in mime, directed the hour-long play, with the narration and dramatisation done by Sundaram. While Rani of Atthi Pookkal fame played Lady Macbeth, Vikash was Macbeth. Y.Gee. Mahendran’s daughter Madhuvanthi also portrayed her role well.
