‘Will never make Telugu films’ Says blockbuster director Rohit Shetty
Regional films have great scripts and can be made with small budgets
Mumbai: Rohit Shetty’s latest film Singham Returns might be a South remake, and his biggest blockbuster to date, Chennai Express may have a Tamil connect, but the director reveals that while he is happy to remake Tamil and Telugu blockbusters in Hindi, he is not keen on directing regional cinema.
Having grossed the highest box-office returns from Chennai Express, Rohit will never make a Telugu or Tamil film. He says frankly, “I do not know the language. Therefore, I will not be able to bring forth the essential regional feel on the screen. I do not want to deprive or cheat my audience of any nuance of entertainment. As for the sub-titles in Chennai Express, my peers were not sure whether that would work.
Yet I decided to go ahead with the idea. I wanted the audiences to get the exact feel of the story. They could connect to it. I am happy that the film has done well down South. Especially, in Hyderabad people went berserk and applauded the film. We received a huge response from all over South.”
Rohit also does not believe that Bollywood alone remakes South films,
“Definitely not… it is an exchange of ideas. Regional films have great scripts and can be made with small budgets. South filmmakers, too, have made quite a few Hindi remakes, right from Trishul, Lage Raho Munna Bhai… Golmaal and a few more.”
Moving on to giving insights about his mother’s feelings towards him, he says, “My mother is happy about my professional progress. But she is always afraid for me when I do action scenes. Like every mother she too fears for her son (me). If I take a flight she will keep praying for my flight to land safely, if it rains and I am not at home she keeps waiting impatiently for me to reach home safely. She loves me immensely, is deeply concerned about my well-being.”
