Hyderabad: The Madannapet police on Monday booked TRS MP Kalvakuntla Kavitha on sedition charges for her remarks on Jammu & Kashmir and Telangana.

A local court had ordered the police to file an FIR against her following a complaint by BJP’s city legal cell convener Mr K. Karunasagar, who had stated that Ms Kavitha had allegedly stated that Jammu & Kashmir and Telangana states were not part of India before independence.

Police has booked a case under IPC section 124 A for sedition, 153 A for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and for acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony, assertions prejudicial to na-tional-integration, and Sect-ion 505 for making stateme-nts conducive to public mischief.

Madannapet police inspector K.P.V. Raju, said that they have started investigation after issuing the FIR.

In an interview to an English daily in New Delhi, Ms Kavitha had stated that J&K and Telangana were not part of India before independence. Commenting on the J&K issue, she had also opined that the international boundaries should be redefined, the petitioner said in his complaint.

The Seventh Additional Chief Metropolitan Magis-t-rate court has also asked the police to submit a report on this issue by September 11.

Meanwhile, legal experts said that the police cannot arrest Ms Kavitha since the place of incident was not under the jurisdiction of Hyderabad police.
