Hyderabad: It is going to be a costly Independence Day for the Andhra Pradesh government. The expenditure to conduct the Independence Day celebrations at Kurnool on August 15 will be around Rs 7 to Rs 8 crore. The state government has sanctioned Rs 5 crore to the General Administration Department (GAD) and released Rs 3 crore for the arrangements.
The government also sanctioned Rs1.21 crore to the police department for the security arrangements and others, though the department actually sought Rs 1.41 crore.
In the united state, the Independence Day expenditure used to be Rs 70 to 80 lakhs. This time, the officials have to be paid travel allowance to come to Kurnool, said one official explaining the increased amount of budget.
This is not the first time that the AP government is accused of splurging. AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu held collectors’ conference at a five-star hotel in Vijayawada, due to lack of proper government accommodation. Finance department sources said that the total expenditure for the collector’s conference reached almost Rs50 lakh.
