Businessman lies about Seven crore theft
Drugged, robbed by his friends, claims Vaniyambadi realtor
VELLORE: A few crores stolen and an unconscious businessman admitted to a government hospital was enough to send the police scurrying to solve the theft case. But, in the end, it turned out that the man who lodged the complaint was actually trying to escape from his creditors.
Mohamed Amim (54), son of Mohamed Yosuf, a realtor and resident of Hospital road, Vaniyambadi, got admitted to the Vaniyambadi government hospital on Wednesday morning, claiming that he had been drugged and robbed by his friends.
According to Amim’s oral statement to the police at the hospital, the Rs 7.35 crore that he was carrying in his car from Bengaluru to Gudiyattam on Tuesday night, was stolen by his friends after they got him unconscious by offering a drink.
When the hospital sources informed the police about so many crores of rupees being lost by a businessman who was admitted to the GH, Tirupattur DSP Sujatha, Vaniyambadi town police inspector Palani, Natrampalli inspector Pooncholai, forensic director Pari and other police officers rushed to the hospital. During the enquiry, he said he lost the money while on way to Gudiyattam from Bengaluru on Tuesday around 10 pm.
But technology came to the rescue of the police in solving what could have been a sensational robbery.
DSP Sujatha, while checking the calls made from Amim’s mobile phone, found that he had called up several of his friends and relatives at 9 pm on Tuesday from Ambur and not from Bengaluru. He had also made some phone calls after the ‘incident’, but they were routed through the Ambur cell phone tower, said Palani.
The police came to understand that Mohamed Amim had borrowed several crores of rupees from various persons and was just staging a drama to escape from his creditors. Shamefaced, Amim apologised to the police officers for making the false statements, said Palani. Later in the evening, the case was handed over to the Natrampalli police. It is expected that Mohamed Amim will be arrested on Thursday.
