Chennai police on high alert at Fort St George

Almost 18000 police personnel have been deployed in and around secretariat complex

Chennai: Cops swept secretariat campus ahead of Independence Day celebration to make sure a comprehensive security is in place for the function on Friday.  Every nook and corner of Fort St George where chief minister  will be hoisting the national flag on Friday were subjected to anti-sabotage check on Thursday.
 
The city police had already deployed around 5,500 personnel in and around the state secretariat complex. Another 12,000 personnel are posted at various points in the city to beef up security. 
The police, however, maintained that there was no specific threat but the security measures were increased based on a general alert from central agencies.
 
The police had set up vehicle check post at 12 entry points around the city besides 67  check posts inside Chennai. All lodges, mansions and hotels are being checked and they have been asked to cooperate with the police in providing information on any suspected movements, according to the official.
 
Personnel of the Coastal security group have also increased the vigil.
