Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s maiden Independence Day Speech on Friday earned him kudos. The PM’s 65-minute speech dwelt largely on women’s issues,  as he denounced the growing number of rapes  and incidents of female foeticide, and lauded the contribution of women in the growth of the country.

Meanwhile, in Telangana, Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao also made a similar gesture by registering lands in the name of women. With these gestures by the Centre and state government, the 68th Independance Day turned into  a new beginning for a more balanced society. Here’s what Hyderabadis had to say on the PM’s speech:

It’s a great gesture from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to mention the point about the medals won by women at CWG. Sports are an important part of the development of the country. This would encourage sports in the country. We always notice that a developed country has more medals. As India is progressing towards being a developed country, I feel that sports will play a key role.”

Sports will also teach women to be strong, to be truthful and fair. Modi also spoke about rape and female feticide. I am sure the country will remember this for a long time. My request to the prime minister is to prioritise sports in our country and think of new ways of developing sports.”

As a country, we are moving towards a huge change, from being a patriarchal society to a more balanced one. And the Prime Minister’s speech reflects that. Importantly, this shift will aim at a core change in the way women are treated and respected and not just on superficial levels. It was with the idea of empowering women that even the Telangana government took the step to register lands in the name of women.

When women are empowered, we are securing not only the family but also future generations and that’s the conviction that led to this move. Also, having interacted with Parliamentarians a lot of late, I can assure you that things are changing and for the good.”
