Hyderabad:Telangana State Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s announcement on the permanent closure of recreation clubs, that allow gambling, has brought relief to hundreds of families.
However, it is yet to be seen if the “big names” that run the illegal business are brought under control. Begumpet, Lower Tank Bund, Bowenpally Saidabad, Banjara Hills, Malakpet, the area opposite the Osmania Hospital, Koti and Abids are the places where these clubs are located.
“During the raids, the focus is always on small clubs. They are shut down for a certain period and reopen later. However, the big clubs are untouched. Their day-to-day business runs into lakhs. Families are destroyed due to the habit of gambling.
Many people face financial losses, but the punishment is not commensurate with anguish. In case of gambling, the law says that the accused will be fined,” said Pavan Kumar, resident of Champapet and a representative of 100 families in Saidabad, who were facing difficulties, owing to these clubs in the residential area.
