Hyderabad: The caste certificate segment in the Intensive Housing Survey 2014 has confused several inter-caste married couples in Greater Hyderabad, who do not know whose certificate should be furnished (individual or both).

This apart, there is also confusion over which caste should they declare for their children. People who have converted are also puzzled about the caste segment. The coded form has not specified how converted families should declare their caste details.

Meena Kumari (name changed) from Kapra said, “I am born a Christian and have married a Hindu; both of us have different caste certificates. Because I am a minority, I am eligible for state schemes under the minority quota. For the survey, I am confused whether to declare my caste or my husband’s. If I declare my husband’s caste, I will no longer fall under the minority category to be a beneficiary.”

Another inter-caste couple said, “We haven’t made caste certificates for both our children.”

Several citizens who have converted (not officially) and without the consent of their community elders are also worried about the caste segment, since it will play a major role in seat and job reservations.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation authorities, meanwhile, state that the choice is up to the family whether to declare the caste of the husband or the wife in case of inter-caste marriages; with regard to children’s declaration it is important (but not compulsory) to go as per the father’s caste. In case of converted families, it is entirely their choice. The enumerator will record date as per the suggestions of the family head.
